The year is organized into three units.

Time and Place Unit

    • Alberta's Physical Regions Collaborative Posters: an overview of the six regions (Boreal Forest, Parkland, Rocky Mountains, Grasslands, Foothills, and the Canadian Shield) in Alberta 
    • Alberta's Geographical Regions Lesson and Projects: six different project-based learning activities for students to choose from along with lesson plans to help students learn about the regions and show their learning creatively.
    • Alberta's Physical Regions Reading Passages: six reading passages designed to support learning about Alberta's six geographical regions
    • Immigrants in Alberta: how different groups of people have been and continue to be impacted by racism in Alberta; ways to combat racism; cultural traditions, languages, skills and diversity that has been brought to Alberta by immigrants.
    • Treaties in Alberta: definition and process for treaties according to Canada (the Crown); the five numbered treaties in Alberta: Treaty 4, Treaty 6, Treaty 7, Treaty 8, Treaty 10; the numbered treaties in Canada.
    • First Nations and Métis Communities in Alberta: the many differences of First Nations and Métis communities in Alberta; symbols, cultural differences, languages and traditions of different First Nations and Métis people.
    • Francophones in Alberta: how French language and culture contributes to the diversity and identity of Alberta.
    • Homestead Life Drama Circle: learning about the impact of colonization in Indigenous People who traditionally have lived on the Canadian prairies.
    • Design a Prairie Homestead: a hands-on activity that encourages creative thinking, historical inquiry, and map skills to deepen understanding of prairie settlement and homesteading in Canada.
    • Landmarks in Alberta: natural processes and historical landmarks found in Alberta.

    Systems Unit

    Citizenship Unit

    • Alberta's Identity: Students learn about the factors that make Alberta a unique and diverse place. They will learn about different local cultural festivals, how promote cultures across the province and learn how our experinces shape our understanding of Alberta.
    • Charity and Volunteering: Students learn about civic actions like charity and volunteering that citizens can take to be active citizens; definitions of charity and volunteering; things that can be donated: money, items, or time (volunteering); ways to volunteer in your community; pros and cons of charity and volunteering; creating a plan to help a charity or volunteer.
    • Voting and Elections: Students will learn the vocabulary related to elections in Canada; voting eligibility in Alberta; the process for provincial elections; participate in a voting simulation; learn how civic actions such as being active in the community, helping others, following rules and voting make communities stronger, happier and healthier.
