This unit was designed specifically for Alberta Grade 3 science teachers. It includes:

  • lesson plans with step-by-step instructions and options for modifications.
  • student pages and templates.
  • answer keys and suggested answers.
  • photos of student examples.
  • a unit vocabulary list with pronunciations and definitions, word wall words, glossary, student glossary where students can write the definitions.
  • ideas for how to use this resource in the classroom, online, or a mix.

  • student slides for reading and writing pages that use Google Slides. You must download the PDF files and use the access links in the files to get your digital copies.
  • an alignment guide for Alberta Outcomes in each resource listed by activity.
  • "I can" statements in student-friendly language and format for students to self-assess their learning in each lesson.
  • a unit plan and a list of Alberta Science outcomes to help with planning.
  • an outline of materials for each lesson in the unit.
  • a list of materials to make a science kit for the unit to save you time.

These resources are included in this bundle:

  • Contact Forces: ways to apply forces, strength of force, direction of force, changes to force, Newton’s 1st law; scientific method: objective observations, asking new questions; contact forces: applied, friction, tension and elastic/spring.
  • Simple Machines Collaborative Poster: introduction to the six simple machines: screw, inclined plane, lever, wedge, wheel and axle, and pulley.
  • Wheels, Levers and Inclined Planes: detailed investigations and exploring inclined planes, levers and wheels (and axles); brief information about screws, wedges and pulleys; building inclined planes, levers and devices that use wheels (and axles); exploring different types of levers (though students do not formally classify them); exploring different tools used by Indigenous People including the ulu, travois, red river cart, kakivak, bird dart, hide scrapers, arrowheads and many more; identifying different simple machines.
  • Design a Carnival Attraction Simple Machines STEM Project: a task that uses as many simple machines as you teach: pulleys, levers, wedges, screws, inclined planes, wheels, and axles. Students will choose at least two for their project and should have a basic understanding of how those simple machines work to reduce the amount of force needed.
  • scientific method outcomes are embedded into the lessons

These lessons align with:

  • Alberta Science Curriculum © 2022 Grade 3

These lessons support:

  • any lesson about forces, simple machines or physics.
  • learning about applied or contact forces.
