Matter Unit Alberta Grade 3 Science Lessons and Activities | Paper and Digital
Students will learn about the changes water goes through as it moves around the water cycle. This lesson focuses on evaporation, condensation and precipitation as water moves around the globe. Best of all, you don't have to plan anything because we did it for you!
This unit was designed specifically for Alberta Grade 3 science teachers. It includes:
- lesson plans with step-by-step instructions and options for modifications.
- student pages and templates.
- answer keys and suggested answers.
- photos of student examples.
- ideas for how to use this resource in the classroom, online, or a mix.
- digital versions of all the student reading and writing pages that use Google Slides. You must download the PDF files and use the access links in the files to get your digital copies.
- an alignment guide for Alberta Outcomes in each resource.
- a unit plan and a list of Alberta Science outcomes to help with planning.
These resources are included in this bundle:
- Water Cycle Collaborative Poster: an introduction to the water cycle. The poster features evaporation, precipitation and condensation. We have also included labels with definitions for transpiration, runoff and groundwater.
- The Water Cycle Lesson & Activities: stages of the water cycle: precipitation, evaporation, condensation and options to add runoff, groundwater and transpiration; changing states of matter in the water cycle; investigating phenomena; making observations;
- Water and Ice Safety: local bodies of water. This can be done wherever you live. The page is designed for you to focus on your local area; respecting bodies of water and taking care of water ecosystems; changes to bodies of water over different seasons; safety around ice on surfaces of bodies of water; hidden dangers beneath the water.
- Matter Changes: the states of matter: solids, liquids, gases and their basic properties; sorting matter by its properties; hot and cold and how these changes affect matter; boiling and freezing points of water in Celsius; reversible and permanent changes; making observations; being objective during experiments; experiments about melting, freezing, evaporating and condensing.
- Raw and Processed Materials: the difference between raw and processed materials; how clothing is made historically by First Nations Peoples and in modern times; materials are processed with a purpose; the variety of processed materials that can be created from raw products; how Indigenous People respect the land when using raw materials or processing them.
- scientific method outcomes are embedded into the lessons
These lessons align with:
- Alberta Science Curriculum © 2022 Grade 3 (new outcomes)
These lessons support:
- any lesson about the water cycle, water safety, changes to matter, raw and processed materials.
