We put our favourite Valentine's Day activities into one bundle that will make your kids think they are having fun, but they are actually thinking and working. This is a great addition to your classroom during the month of February.
Our students said these activities were perfect for upper elementary because they weren't too lovey-dovey. :)
Valentine's Day Puzzles and Games
- word games that develop skills such as alphabetizing, word finds, brainstorming, designing and math games. These are designed to be challenging.
- 4 mystery stories that use logic skills, critical thinking and deductive reasoning to solve a puzzle. These are written for an approximate Grade 4 reading level, but if they are challenging, you can read them together as a class.
- a simple offline coding activity.
- answer keys.
- a digital version that uses Google Slides. To download the digital version, first download the PDF file and then use the link inside that file.
- TEN Valentine's Day-themed logic puzzles. We use these as Valentine party games, Valentine centres, early finishers or for students who need a bit of quiet during a very busy day.
- paper and Google Slides versions. The Google Slides version includes loose text which can be read by assistive technology.
- hints to help students complete them.
- answer keys.
- instructions on how to use these puzzles in your classroom.
- Canadian and American spellings.
Valentine's Day Writing Prompts
- teacher instructions on how to use the prompts.
- student genre reference page.
- simple criteria for each genre: narrative writing (story writing), expository (how-to or nonfiction), persuasive (opinion or argumentative) and poetry (different types, but students do not need to have any knowledge about writing specific types of poetry).
- three formats of prompts: full page, half page, and a Google Slides version so you can use the format that works for you (and your copy budget)
- three prompts for each of the ten days (that's 30 prompts) that alternate between narrative, persuasive, expository and poetry genres. All of the prompts fit with a Valentine's Day theme.
- link to a blog post with more ideas on how to use the prompts.
- ideas for Valentine's Day, but these prompts can be used any time of year.
We're So Sweet Collaborative Poster
- a collaborative poster you can use any time of year, but it's great around Valentine's Day. It features candy and sweets.
- suggestions for how to run the activity with your students.
- sets in 18, 24 or 36 pieces, so you can use them with any size class.
- simple instructions for your students.
- overview image to show where each piece fits into the final poster.
- pieces with different levels of detail so you can differentiate slightly.
- assembly instructions with tips for making the process as easy as possible.
- follow-up activities to extend learning.
- a vertically oriented poster. Final poster sizes depend on your printer settings, but the approximate sizes are 18 pieces 60 by 90 cm, 24 pieces 72 by 108 cm and 36 pieces 80 by 135 cm.
- individual piece sizes 18 pieces 20 by 15 cm, 24 pieces 18 by 18 cm, 36 pieces 20 by 15 cm.
